JERUSALEM, June 8 — Israel has signaled that it wants a more direct voice in ongoing efforts to reach a broader agreement with Iran, following a brief military exchange that exposed growing differences between Jerusalem and Washington over the direction of regional diplomacy.

The latest confrontation began after Iranian missile launches were followed by Israeli strikes on targets inside Iran, despite public calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for restraint. Although both sides quickly stepped back from further escalation, the episode highlighted Israel’s concern that key decisions affecting its security could be made without sufficient Israeli involvement.

Israeli officials and analysts argue that any long-term arrangement with Tehran must address issues extending beyond the nuclear file, including regional security threats, missile capabilities and the activities of Iran-backed groups across the Middle East. The brief flare-up was widely interpreted as a reminder that Israel retains the ability to influence developments if its concerns are not adequately reflected in negotiations.

Trump has continued to express optimism about the prospects for a wider settlement, stating that both Israel and Iran appear interested in moving toward a ceasefire and eventual diplomatic progress. However, the path toward a comprehensive agreement remains uncertain, with significant disagreements still unresolved.

The incident also underscored the delicate balance facing U.S. policymakers as they attempt to reduce tensions while maintaining support for regional allies. Even though hostilities have paused for now, observers warn that future disagreements over the terms of any peace arrangement could trigger renewed instability.
